Chapter Thirty

Dean’s heart raced.

He made his way to the secret hiding spot behind the Meth Lab. Like all good soldiers, he knew he was in the fight of his life. He wished he could have reached the rest of his platoon. After all, they were in the fight of their lives, too. But the base at the Olympic National Park didn’t work that way. For safety measures, the test subjects were encouraged to hunt on their own. At any one time, they could be spread out over more than twenty miles of mountain range – dense and impossibly difficult, isolated terrain.

No, he needed to save himself.

Dean reached the inner cave, sliding the rock back into place. It formed a small bunker. Still, he felt intensely vulnerable. In his belt he carried a stone carved into a razor-sharp edge to form a stone-age knife, and a wooden spear, while his attackers would be carrying Heckler and Koch HK 280 sniper rifles.

Hidden inside the cave, Dean watched a live video feed of the inside of the Meth Lab.

He watched, as the leader of what he could only assume to be the clean up team approach the Professor. The Professor, apparently aware of what was about to take place, handed over a large pile of folders containing all the data associated with RX16SF.

When the Professor was finished, he said, “Is that everything?”

“Yes, sir. That’s every last piece of data regarding RX16SF.”

“Very good.”

The soldier then withdrew his service pistol and shot the Professor dead.

Dean had seen enough. He was expecting it, but still the betrayal rocked him mentally. He backed away from the Meth Lab – heading silently out into the woods. When he’d reached a relatively safe distance, he flicked the switch, and the Meth Lab exploded, killing the head of the ghosts – an elite team of ex-Special Forces, the government sometimes used when they wanted to wipe the slate clean.

In the confusion of the unexpected explosion, Dean – true to his service motto – silently walked away into the darkness of the night.
